RSY Now a Mercury Thermostat Recycling Drop Off Site

While mercury is a naturally occurring element it can also be highly toxic. Present in a number of consumer and industrial products including thermostats, thermometers, fluorescent lamps, electric switches, batteries, etc., contamination can occur when these products are thrown in the trash, crushed, incinerated, or otherwise mismanaged in a way to cause airborne releases which in turn pollutes water supplies.  Exposures to mercury can affect the human nervous system and harm the brain, heart, kidneys, lungs, and immune system

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and state and local governments are working to reduce mercury pollution through a number of strategies, including eliminating non-essential uses of mercury, increasing recovery and recycling, and promoting the use of non-mercury alternatives. Replacing mercury thermostats with energy saving programmable electronic thermostats increases the opportunity to prevent pollution.

Covanta Energy operates York County’s Energy-from-Waste facility and has partnered with Re-Source York by offering a free collection bin, free shipping and free recycling for thermostats that are turned in by our customers.

Do your part (and tell others) to avoid mercury pollution by bringing in your old thermostats to our 235 N. Beaver Street store.
